10 Ways to Keep Eyes Healthy and Vital

healthy-eyeOur eyes are indispensable, and slowly losing one’s sight can be a traumatizing experience that limits independence. Many eye diseases, such as cataracts and macular degeneration, become worse with age. However, there are a few actions that can be taken to prevent eye disease and keep our eyes healthy. The following ten steps will ensure your vision stays sharp:

1 – Regular examinations

Eye exams help identify problems as soon as possible, making them easier for a doctor to treat. Existing conditions require frequent visits, so talk to a doctor to work out a schedule that is right for you.

2 – Watch the alcohol

Overconsumption of alcohol has been linked to cataracts and other eye diseases. Try a limit of three drinks a week, and make it red wine when possible. Red wine contains resveratrol and antioxidants that give eyes a boost.

3 – Sunglasses

Wearing sunglasses is crucial to preventing eye problems. Make sure they block 100 percent of UVA and UVB rays. Wraparound sunglasses are best, since they limit the amount of sunlight eyes are exposed to. Keep in mind, UV damage to the eyes accumulates over time. Protecting the eyes consistently, starting in childhood, can prevent these issues from ever being a problem.

4 – Don’t smoke

Smoking causes an array of health issues, including damage to the eyes. It increases the likelihood of cataracts, macular degeneration and other eye diseases. The smoke itself is irritating as well, which can cause red, puffy, unattractive eyes.

5 – Stay in good health

Good health keeps eye diseases at bay. Diabetics or people with other medical issues should follow a management plan as prescribed by a doctor.

6 – Keep weight in check

Often, obesity is linked with high blood pressure and high blood sugar. These two conditions affect eyesight and contribute to the development of eye disease. Make sure to get enough exercise, and try to shed any extra pounds.

7 – Eat colorfully

Colorful fruits and vegetables provide the vitamins and minerals essential to good eye health. Build a diet with a significant amount of these wonder foods. Taking an eye supplement may help, but obtaining the nutrients through a natural diet is far better.

8 – Wear protective eye gear

When working with chemicals, tools or any other potentially dangerous activities, protect the eyes with shatter-proof goggles. Injury-induced eye damage can cause permanent harm; prevention is vital.

9 – Gives eyes a rest

Eye strain comes after too much time spent reading or looking at a computer screen. Blinking frequently helps, but try to give the eyes a five minute break each hour. Looking into the distance or closing your eyes is enough to help them rest. Though eye strain does not lead to any permanent damage, it can be uncomfortable. Symptoms include watery, aching eyes.

10 – Keep contacts clean

When contacts are not properly cared for, eye infections can occur. Clean contacts regularly in the manner instructed, and change them habitually. Avoid sleeping in contacts, as this can cause further irritation and spread infection.
