Pros and Cons about getting Lasik

Lasik surgeryPeople who suffer from poor eyesight might consider undergoing Lasik surgery. Lasik surgery is used to correct poor vision and allow people to see without glasses or contacts. After living with contacts or glasses for a while, having eye surgery can seem like a welcome option.

Lasik works by using a laser to change the shape of your cornea. The laser cuts your cornea, creating a tiny corneal flap that the surgeon can use to lift and expose underlying corneal tissue. The laser is then used to reshape the cornea according to the specific patient’s needs. The flap is restored to its normal position and the surgery is completed.

Why LASIK ?

The pros of undergoing Lasik surgery are greater than one may expect.

1 – Not only will the patient gain the ability to see clearly without having to use glasses or contacts, they will also gain more self-esteem and confidence.

2 – Having to maintain prescription updates for glasses or contacts is a hassle and after undergoing Lasik surgery, there is a great chance that no corrective wear will be needed.

3 – The surgery itself will last less than 30 minutes and the results are immediate.

4 – There are no bandages or stiches required with the surgery and the patient is free to return home immediately afterwards.

5 – To add on to the list of benefits, patients who have Lasik correctional surgery are then able to apply to jobs that require good eyesight, such as becoming a pilot.

6 – If for any reason, further vision correction is needed in the future, adjustments can still be made to the patient’s eyes.

Any negatives ?

There are a few possible drawbacks to having Lasik surgery.

1 – While extremely rare, there is a chance of vision loss.

2 – The changes that the laser performs on the cornea cannot be reversed.

3 – Some side effects of having Lasik surgery are blurred vision, reduction in tear production, halos, and trouble seeing at night.

4 – There is a possibility that the patient will need to wear glasses later in life or that their vision may not be completely restored to perfect.

Complications from Lasik surgery are very rare, but be sure to talk extensively with your eye doctor about your eyes and if you are a good candidate for the surgery. Ask about any specific risks that might be associated with your specific eye problem.
